Hannah Brodsky

I am honored to be our school’s inaugural poet laureate and to get the opportunity to share my love of poetry with everyone. I treat my poetry very much like a journal and because of this, all of my poems are deeply personal and correspond with specific periods or moments in my life. I first started writing poems because of an interest in songwriting (though my musical skills are somewhat lacking) and quickly realized, through reading more and developing my use of language, how much I was able to communicate in simple lines and verse. I love how the medium of poetry allows for so much freedom and so many different interpretations of beautiful words. Poetry is an individual reflection, a meditation, philosophy, art, and is even mathematical. In the air of Walt Whitman, one of my favorite poets, poetry is the universal. It is with this in mind that I take on this new position for the school; to encourage all students to develop a love and appreciation for poetry and to try their hand at writing.

My goal as BB&N’s 2023-2024 poet laureate is to facilitate conversations, events, and opportunities to encourage the work of writers, create an appreciation for poetry and the power of words across BB&N’s campuses, and to encourage writing poetry as a medium of self-expression for all students.
