Chicago Formatting and citation Checklist

Page layout and formatting

12-point Times New Roman font for the entire paper, including the text in the headers, footers, footnotes, and bibliography. Some teachers may do 10-point Times New Roman for footnotes.

One-inch margins on all sides of the paper.
-
Includes page numbers in the proper position. No number on the cover/first page.

Citation formatting
-
Citation style used is Chicago (not MLA, APA, etc.)
-
Footnotes and bibliography are in the correct format
-
Publication titles are in italics (book, journal, newspaper title)
-
Chapter and article titles are inside quotation marks
-
Capitalize properly regardless of the original format
Footnotes
-
Footnotes use Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3)
-
Footnote numbers at the end of the sentence after all punctuation
-
Footnotes have a first line indent for each citation
-
Repeated citations use shortened form
Bibliography
-
Bibliography entries are in alphabetical order
-
Bibliography uses a hanging indent

Watch out for...
-
Formatting differences between footnotes and the bibliography.

Footnote format uses "firstname lastname," while the bibliography uses "lastname, firstname."

Footnotes use a first line indent, while the bibliography uses a hanging indent.

Miscounting your pages.

Do not include the cover page in the page count (the first text page is page 1).

Do include all pages of the bibliography in the page count.
